Do's and Don'ts

Homeowner Tips:

Please be cautious of your water usage. Spacing your water use throughout the day and week contributes
significantly to the health and longevity of your system.
  • Avoid doing more than 2 loads of laundry consecutively.
  • Avoid using large amounts of water at one time: For example, running the dishwasher while also taking a shower.
  • Do not connect other water sources to the system.  Example do not route discharge from water softeners into the system.
  • Avoid discarding mop water into the system.

Be careful of the kind of products you dispose.  We recommend that you DO NOT put these products in your       system:
  • Certain brands of toilet paper (ask your technician for details.)
  • Phosphates (chemicals in cleaning supplies) "Green" cleaning products are recommended.
  • Do not run pesticides, paints, household chemicals, automotive fluids, or other toxins down the drain.
  • Do not dispose of home brewery waste, strong medicines, or antibiotics.
  • Avoid using anti-bacteria soaps, strong disinfectants, or bleaches.
  • Do not pour grease, fats, or cooking oils down the sink drain.
  • Do not flush feminine hygiene products, cigarette butts, disposable diapers, hair, coffee grounds, rags, paper towels, baby wipes, or bandages.
  • Do not dispose of any type of birth control products.
  • Do not dispose of citrus products (ex. oranges, lemons, grapefruits) into your system.

What You Can Do:
  • Use cleaning products that are non-chlorine, biodegradable, non-toxic, and non-corrosive.
  • Use detergents that are low sudsing, low in phosphates and biodegradable with washing soda ingredients.
  • Use Fabric softener dryer sheets rather than liquids.
  • Use your garbage disposal sparingly.
  • Put hair traps over shower/tub drains.
  • Maintain adequate vegetative cover (grass) over the drain field.
  • Keep automobiles and heavy equipment off the system.
  • Make a diagram showing the location of your tank drain field and repair area.
  • Do not plan any building additions, pools, driveways, or other construction work near the septic system or the repair area.

**One more helpful tip: It is highly recommended that you do not plant a vegetable garden in your drainage field.
